The Future of Photography

Technology has improved a lot since the digital camera was first introduced. Now everyone can pictures from their cell phone and post it on the internet for everyone to see. And as the years go by people are inventing new devices to make the object even smaller and more advanced.
The new camera called the Lytro which is about 4 inches and lightweight with 8gigabyte model which can capture about 350 images for price of $ 399 in which you shoot now and focus later. Where you don't need to focus on the object your are trying to capture instead you take picture now and focus later.

Augmented Reality Glasses: Google’s Vision of the Future

In future photography will be just point and shoot and focus later. Like in the picture above you can wear your glasses in which camera is attached with it and you can take picture just with a blink of an eye. About implanting cameras to your earlobes or your eyes in the future I don't approve of that idea where it has to do with your body parts.

How photographs in the media betray us?

Photographs in media betray us by altering the images and making us believe the remade photographs were real. Photographers shouldn’t go to the extent where it makes major impact in other people’s lives as the photograph posted by Brian Walski. Photojournalist has to follow the code of ethics set for them but still few photographers still alter images to this day. Some get caught and get fired while others who continue to alter images. Photographs must be truthful like Long said and correcting the technical deficiencies must be limited where they can only crop or correct exposure and light balance. They shouldn’t add or remove objects where it changes the original picture. They tamper with photographs and some even stage their photos which are against the code of ethics and they believe that audience wants that. Audience such as myself do want stage photographs but not to the extent where the truth is tampered with.

When going through the notes on alterations and audience response. Audiences were acceptable on alterations compared to photographers. Examples of Abrahim Lincoln picture which was originally published in 1826 was later tampered with and shown with the head of politician John Calhoun. Photographers can’t take other picture and show them as their own, this is like stealing and saying that it was your own. Most of the photojournalist find it unethical and unacceptable (82.3%) while audience response were only 50.2 %.

Alterations are not allowed in press photography, but they are one of the tools used in contemporary art photography? Why?

In contemporary art photography, photographers can use other tools to make their photos look like how they want people to see. They can alter contemporary art as they are not making changes to a true event or trying to hide anything. Alterations are not allowed in press photography as the photo captures the true events and as per NPPA code of ethics should be followed and if press photographs are altered then it would lose its true meaning whereas in art photography the photographer takes picture of anything that he or she likes and alter to make the photo as they want to portray based on their experiences. 

 Compare photographs of Sommer,Adams, Klett versus Parkharrison,Muniz and Crewdson? What happened to the photography? Is this it's future?

Adams photographs  are of modern post war landscapes  and pictures of the developed American west. Sommer liked to take pictures of landscape and Adams and Klett were mostly in Black and White and mostly of western landscapes of Grand Canyon and Yosemite park and they focused more on natural landscape.

Whereas Parkharrison, Crewdson focuses more on color and different seasons of the year based on it he uses light subtle colors to represent the spring and summer seasons and dark colors for winter season. Muniz liked to remake famous artwork of pictures of look more like a painting. 

Photography has advanced due to advancement in technology you can alter the picture of the old women to make her younger or erase marks on their face.  Photographers today have more knowledge and are more experienced in their work. Like vik Muniz works with dirt, diamonds, sugar and chocolate syrup to create bold and witty images from art history.

Henri Cariter Bresson

I choose this picture as this is a famous picture of the Che Guevara whose picture is posted on bags and T shirts. Henri Cartier Bresson liked to take pictures of famous political leaders that made major impact on the country. Henri Cartier Bresson likes to take pictures of famous celebrities and political leaders that change the history of that country or the world and he also like taking pictures of the events that took place like the picture he took Mahatma Gandhi in 1948 before he was assasinated. This picture shows the most important figures in Cuban Revolution.

Mahatma Gandhi

His name Mohan Das Karamchand Gandhi who through peace got their country back from the British Empire. Henri Cartier Bresson images revealed the early raw possibilities of street photography and photojournalism in general.

Mohandas Gandhi, right, talks with Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1946. Gandhi, who died in 1948, led nonviolent protests to push for India's freedom from British rule. Local Indian organizations are planning events for Oct. 2, Gandhi's birthday.

This photograph shows Mahatma Gandhi and Jawahalal Nehru having conversation despite of the suffering and hunger Indian people went through because of the British Rule in India and Gandhis attempts to get independence from British Empire through non violence. True events in history of India .

CHINA. Beijing. December 1948. A mother huddles her baby close to her, hoping that her sign will bring help. A refugee in the big city. She has written "I am called Sun. My husband died of illness. We are strangers in this town. We have no means of existence. I am obliged to ask charity of those who have kind hearts".
This picture taken during Chinese Revolution shows how the people were suffering during the war and how their lives were affected which made this mother beg in the streets so that her children wouldnt go hungry. Henri Cartier liked to show the impact the war had on the public and how people of that particular country was suffering and war had no meaning shows how he believed in peace.

Heri liked to capture images in history showing the people of other world  about the country like India showing how it is in India

Henri Cartier and Robert Capa work was similar showing true events in history to people of the other countries about the War but Henri Cartier focused more on the public of the country on how they were coping and as well as the political leaders where as Robert Capa captured pictures mostly of the soldiers during the war.

Henri Cartier liked to capture the true events in history and famous celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Coco Chanel who was the first women in Fashion industry to dress like a man.

 Cartier-Bresson traveled east, spending  time in India, where he met and took pictures of Mahatma Gandhi before his assassination in 1948. Henri Cartier work to  capture Gandhi's death and its impact on the country became one of Life Magazine's most prized photo essays.

Henri Cartier-Bresson's interest in the world which led him on a three-year journey through Asia. When the he returned to France in 1952 he published his first book, "The Decisive Moment."

He was there for the Spanish Civil War and the Chinese revolution. His work ranged from Che Guevara to Marilyn Monroe , including Harpers Bazaar and Vogue and many others. In his later years he quit Magnum and focus on Drawing and painting.

In 2003, Cartier-Bresson, along with his wife and daughter, took an important step in securing his legacy as an artist with the creation of the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris in an effort to preserve his work. On his 96th birthday, Henri Cartier-Bresson passed away at his home in Provence on August 3, 2004.

- What are the main differences and similarities?
They all have different approaches on how photographs should be taken based on their own experiences.Eugene Smith liked to stage the picture that he took as well as Sebastiao Salgado.
Eugene Smith: The Walk to Paradise Garden, photograph of Smith’sson Patrick and daughter Juanita, 1946. Smith’s son remembers that he and his sister had to walk 3-4 times in front of his father’s camera. Whereas Salgado feels he believes in a sense becoming one with those people he photographed, and worked to understand the existence of those he depicts (Salgado, 1990). Salgado spent time with people, Salgado felt, he was able to see their suffering.” (pp.146-147).
Kertesz’s and Cartier-Bresson’s they believed that the photograph should be untouched to show the reality.

- What’s the better journalistic approach?
Journalistic better approach is not to tamper with the picture and show the truth behind the real life on what the people in the picture are going through. The true events happening in the world should be shown as it is and need to follow the code of ethics ( NPPA). Sebastiao Salgado wanted to get to know the people in order to show the real story in the picture on how he felt the people was going through. Eugene smith wanted to capture the photograph by taking picture at the right moment by staging for instance how he did with the picture taken of his son and daughter.



Eugene Smith: Tomoko Uemura in her bathwith the people he captured in his photographs. Minamata, a Japanesefishing village whose population was poisoned by the mercury in the water.




Salgado portrays the conditions very powerfully in his photos.

AFTER

  Original picture
These days there are many softwares that let you edit pictures and  crop the unwanted display in your picture . We can easily upload the picture and download free software editing tools to make the picture appear the way you want to. This picture was taken in Niagara at Port Dalhousie on September labour day long weekend while coming back from buffalo, new york after going shopping  as we wanted to get away from the city life and get some fresh air and relax near the lake ontario. There were couples there to relax and enjoy the last week of the summer and other people coming there to fish and some parents bringing their children to enjoy the wheather and the scenery of the place. And as you can see at the bottom picture sailors coming back from sailing at the end of the day. I love the picture of the light house it makes me remind me of the ghost pictures that i had seen before. I  edited this picture to look like it is actually shown in the movies as an broken down old place which has been abandoned, makes you think and wonder about the spirits wandering around and where tourist come to visit the haunted place. I also cropped the arms of the person on the left as it doesnt makes the picture look good.

This is also taken in Niagara at a place called      Port Dalhousie. I cropped the side of the picture and gave a special effects called Tilt Shifted.Tilt shift photographs create an optical illusion that makes scenes appear as if they are actually miniature models .The outer edges are blurred which tricks the eye into thinking everything in the unblurred parts as miniature and it is easy to reproduce. When you look at this picture you feel at ease and feel like going cruising with your friends to get away from the city life and forget all the stress behind. These days there many more expensive software programs where you can do more with your digital images, where you can remove the wrinkles and make someone look younger and remove scars or erase red eye photos. The edited picture looks more clear and brighter while the original looks a bit dull and shows more clouds in the sky makes you feel like its going to rain.

WEEK 4

1)      What was the main Stieglitz's interest? What's Pictorialism and what is Naturalism? Did he stay devoted to this movement?  What do you see on his photographs?

Stieglitz’s interest was to show the changes happening in America during that time and how the country was building relationship with other neighboring countries and was not considered as an isolated. His pictures showed the transformation New York went through after building of skyscrapers, “American culture was redefining its fundamental ways of seeing, thinking and experiencing the world is the subject of the first full-length film biography of the photographer "Alfred Stieglitz - The Eloquent Eye. “Stieglitz was interested into Pictorial Photography, which is a style of pictures that states their own artistry and the meaning behind it. The atmosphere, kind scenes, and tones are the few elements that were mostly applied on pictorial photographs. Another concept is Naturalism which sharply concentrated on a subject and close details faded away.

2)      What was White's impact on photography as a medium? What do you see on his photographs?

White believed that taking photographs and examining photographs was a spiritual act. White's writings stressed and encouraged his thoughts as in Mirrors, Messages, and Appearance. Absolutely, Whites pictures shows pictures of natural resources and its effects on nature. White's impact on photography was his interest on how the viewer corresponds to what they feel about the image.

White says: “We remember images that we want to remember. The reason why we want to remember an image varies: because we simply "love it," or dislike it so intensely that it becomes compulsive, or because it has made us realize something about ourselves, or has brought about some slight change in us. Perhaps the reader can recall some image, after the seeing of which, he has never been quite the same.”

3)     What do you see on Man Ray's photos? Are they similar or absolutely different than Stieglitz’s photos?

Man Rays Photos are mostly of women. He works with collage, assemblage, found objects, and experimental photography, creating “camera-less” photographic and he also created a technique using photograms he called rayographs, which he described as "pure dadaism".Stieglitz photos are fixated on the naturalism and surroundings of the image.

 4) What do you see on Moholo-Nagy's photographs?

Moholo-Nagys Photographs present his imagery through the new technology of interactive computer systems. Moholy-Nagy counted among his artistic roles those of photographer, filmmaker, typographer, painter, sculptor, writer, graphic designer, stage designer, and teacher; he was also enthusiastic about employing new media when exploring new ideas of creative expression.

5)     Are these photographers painters? Do they all paint with their cameras or maybe only some of them?

  All these photographers are painters and photographers as they work with their knowledge of art and to make the picture look more like painting. Their photographs show us their experience of knowledge through their course of different education they got.
